YOUNG ADULT SUNDAY
SCHOOL CLASS & YOUTH DEPARTMENT HOLDS BACK-TO-SCHOOL GALA…

On Saturday, August 9,
2008, the Young Adult Sunday School class and the Youth Department held a Back-
to-School Gala at the church. The idea of this event originated among the Young
Adult Sunday School class members as something they wanted to do for the youth,
so they brought aboard the Youth Department members and the Youth Minister, Min.
McIntyre. Much planning went into this event. Sis. Kriss Deas was the Event
Coordinator. She solicited donations from church members and friends of school
supplies, and items for the cook-out. She also received help in distributing
flyers in the community inviting school children to come out to participate.
She solicited her husband, Bro. Eldrin Deas to be in charge of the music, which
he did well in providing wonderful gospel music CD’s throughout the event.
All of the youth were
quite excited on the event day. Everyone came prepared to have loads of fun,
fellowship, and food. Many local churches in the area also held similar events
on that day. Adults and youth, the young and the “older” had quite a time. Some
of the games played were badminton, football, tumbling under the rented inflated
tent, eating, and fellowshipping among all in attendance. Sis. Dawn Deas armed
with a grocery list prepared by Sis. Marsh did the shopping, and Sis. Latonya
Marsh manned the grill, flipping the hamburgers and hot dogs. Youth department
members assisted in serving the refreshments.
Enough funds and donations were gathered to fill
30 book bags of school supplies for those in attendance. Approximately 50
students attended the event, although all did not stay until its conclusion.
Prior to giving out the book bags, each child’s name and their school was filled
out and given to Sis. Kriss Deas. Each child’s name was called out, along with
their school’s name as they came up the front steps of the church to receive
their book bags. Although the babies and toddlers did not receive a book bag
because of their age, they enjoyed just being a part of this event and had a lot
of fun! We’re sure all rested well that night!

Many adults also came out
to assist/enjoy this time of fellowship with the young people. Sis. Verlene
Brown is the Young Adult Sunday School class teacher and is always inspiring her
students to do more. She was also in attendance after completing a day of
work. Her class is now in the process of planning Vacation Bible School for
2009.
Our thanks to everyone who helped to make this
event a marvelous success!
NOTE: Pastor Deas held a “Teen Talk” session with
all of the teenagers after their choir rehearsal on August 23rd. We are sure he
covered a “lot of topics” with them…
