SUNDAY SCHOOL

(Deut. 6:6-9) And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Teach!                 Teach!                 Teach

The Sunday School Department had a recent overhaul to better meet the needs of all of its students.  The Department has successfully held Quarterly Bible Bowls with the “Kingdom Builders” team being undefeated.  Dec. Al Alford, Sunday School Superintendent, has changed the curriculum to focus on getting more students to study their lessons.  Each week questions are distributed to the Adult Class and Young Adult classes for them to answer one week prior to each lesson.  The questions are designed to promote more dialogue between the teachers and students. Additional teachers came on board and all are off to a great start with much enthusiasm!

Sis. Cynthia Howard, Teacher, and Mother Claudia Howard, Assistant, were assigned to the Primary class which also includes pre-schoolers.  Sis. Howard is a graduate of the Sunday School Training Class taught by Pastor Deas and Mother Howard came on board with prior teaching experience.  The classroom is appropriately decorated for this age group. This mother-in-law and daughter-in-law team work very well together.

Sis. Blanche Holmes, Sunday School Training Class graduate, is assigned to the Junior Class.  This class includes students from the ages of 6 or 7 to age 12.  This class was formerly taught by Sis. Deas.  Sis. Holmes is delighted to teach this group of young people and the class is continually growing. The students display their knowledge during the review time held approximately once a month.  Pastor Deas has challenged this class along with the Senior class to write an essay about Love and the winner from each class will receive a small monetary stipend.

Sis. Yolanda Murphy, a former home school instructor for her three children, was assigned to the Senior Class after being interviewed by Pastor Deas.  This class age group is from 13-17.  Sis. Murphy began with only about 3 students and has since gone out to compel other young people to come out to Sunday School; because of her diligence and hard work, this class has really grown in numbers.

Sis. Verlene Brown, Sunday School Training Class graduate, is the former teacher for the Senior class.  She volunteered to change in order to teach the Young Adult class, ages 18-25.  Sis. Brown is so enthusiastic with this group, she can constantly be heard through the doors in each class. Her class is located across from the Adult class.  Sis. Brown is always giving her class real life experience examples to correlate with her lessons.  When one walks into her class, they begin to learn from her colorful posters and everyone feels at home in the warm décor she has created.

Bro. Kenneth Jackson, former Sunday School Superintendent and  teacher from Denmark, South Carolina, teaches the Adult Sunday School class along with Dec. Al Alford. He was trained to use various teaching techniques through our National Sunday School Training Program and have taught all levels of students in the church and in the public school systems of South Carolina and Georgia.  Bro. Jackson’s style is more of lecture, and giving thought provoking questions.  You can tell he is truly a pastor/preacher’s son in his delivery of the lesson. He brings the lessons to everyday experiences and even taught one year in the prison system of SC through the Prison-Arts program of the SC Arts Commission.
