COMMUNITY BACK TO SCHOOL AFFAIR…

On Saturday, August 8, 2009 our 2nd Community Back to School Affair was held at the church.  Many volunteers and willing workers helped to make this year’s event a great success.  Sis. Kriss Deas, a teacher with the Public School System, served as the Coordinator. This idea originated in the Young Adult Sunday School Class whose illustrious and dynamic Teacher is Sister Verlene Brown, who won Teacher of the Year. In order to secure funds for the event, donations were cheerfully given by the church members raising over $700 in order to buy book bags and school supplies, refreshments, and rental of play equipment.  Over 60 youth were in attendance, although all were not present for the final presentation of the school supplies.

Kriss needed many assistants for this event, and she was not left standing alone.  Bro. Emmanuel & Natalie Deas passed out flyers in the neighborhood advertising the event.  Dec. Jerome Howard, Sisters LaTonya Marsh and Verlene Brown purchased the refreshments.  Sisters Allison Crawford and Kriss Deas braved the back to school crowds to purchase the book bags and school supplies, later followed by Bro. Larry Coleman who made an additional supply run. The youth invited many from their neighborhood to come out, so Bro. Coleman drove the church van to pick them up. Bro. Eldrin Deas assisted his wife with the sound equipment spreading good old fashioned gospel music throughout the Progressive grounds.  The ministers and brothers chaperoned inside and on the church grounds.  Sis. Cynthia Howard assisted Kriss in distributing the supplies.

Our volunteer chef, Sis. Latonya Marsh saw to it that everyone enjoyed the deliciously grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, slaw, chips, drinks, and chicken for the adults.  Sis. Dawn Deas and Sis. Kiara Gibson assisted in serving the refreshments. Much fun was had by the youth playing football, basketball, various indoor and outdoor games and on the moon-bounce jumping equipment.

As a result of this event and our Vacation Bible School wherein flyers were distributed, we have had two souls to be baptized from the neighborhood, and they are attending the new members’ class.  Two individuals remarked that they were so happy to see the church make an impact with the people in the neighborhood. Pastor Deas spoke with other parents who brought their children out to the event. Youth and parents from our Tucker church were also in attendance at this year’s event.

We salute all of our willing workers for a job well done, and special thanks to Sis. Kriss Deas for her expert coordination in spite of being in summer school working on her Master’s Degree.  She always makes things look so effortless, but we know it is the hard work and sacrifice that makes a difference!
