BROTHERS HOLD ANNUAL
MOTHER’S DAY DINNER…

The
brothers can still cook, which they proved on Sunday, May 8th! The women always
look forward to this time of the year when the brothers sponsor the “Annual
Mother’s Day Dinner.” Even though it is named for mothers, every female
regardless of their age were fed a hardy and delightful meal. The brothers did
an outstanding job, and the “women and guests were well-pleased!”
This year’s dinner featured
“Min. Matthew Pinkney’s famous roasted chicken, Min. Tarryll McIntyre’s
mouth-watering ham, Bro. Emmanuel Deas’ matchless meatloaf, Dec. Al Alford’s
wonderful tasting green beans, and Dec. Jerome Howard’s finger-licking good
collard greens, Bro. Greg Marsh’s very delicious macaroni and cheese, Pastor
Deas’ succulent corn on the cob.” Additions to the meal were rolls, iced tea,
punch, and various desserts, including the “fabulous sweet potato cobbler”
donated by “Miss Bessie.” The brothers were the clean up men for the day, they
finally got to eat (clean-up) what little the women left!
The tables were decorated
with table cloths and clear vases with roses. At the conclusion of the dinner
all of the mothers were presented roses. Sis.Janis Deas suggested the brothers
sponsor a meal at least every other month, but I think her suggestion fell on
deaf ears…
All of the brothers worked
together with the brotherhood chairperson, Min. Tarryll McIntyre to make this
event a wonderful success. If they didn’t cook, they contributed in other ways,
such as monetary donations, purchasing paper products, serving, and working on
the clean-up detail.
Pastor Deas’ sermon for the
day was titled “Portrait of a Mother,” reference scriptures were St. Luke 2nd
chapter, and Exodus 2nd chapter. Other scripture texts were Hebrews
11:24-25; II Kings 4:1-35 and St. John 2:5. Pastor Deas stated that a good
mother will fight till her last breath leaves her body to make sure her child is
loved, taken care of, protected, and secure. He also told the story of Elisha
and the Shunammite woman. The Shunammite woman instructed her husband to build
a room onto their house for the man of God, Elisha. Even though the Shunammite
woman required nothing in return of Elisha, Elisha learned through the servant
Gehazi that the woman was childless, so he prophesized that she would have a
child around the same time the following year, which did come to pass.
Pastor Deas also stated that we all can become wounded healers and not use our
hurt to hurt someone else.
